Once an elderly gentleman was reading Bhagavad-gita on the seashore in Trivandrum. At that moment a young man came and sat beside him. Seeing that the elderly man was reading a religious book, the young man mockingly said: "In the age of science, only foolish people prefer to read old-fashioned books like the Bhagavad-gita. If you had given the same amount of time to science, by now it would have helped the country to rise to greater heights."
The elderly gentleman said nothing and asked: "Who are you? What do you do?" The young man replied, "I am a science student from Calcutta. I have come to pursue a career at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center."
Thereupon the young man told the old man to devote his attention to scientific research, for by reading Bhagavad-gita he would not be able to accomplish anything. The elderly gentleman smiled and got up to leave. As soon as he stood up, four security guards surrounded him and the driver hurriedly pulled up a service car with a red beacon.
Seeing this, the student panicked and asked, "Who are you?". The old man replied with a smile, "Vikram Sarabhai. Chairman of the Bhabha Atomic Research Center." This was the very center where the young man had come to pursue a career in science.
Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian scientist and innovator who is considered by many to be the founder of the entire Indian space program. At the time, 13 research organizations bore Vikram Sarabhai's name, along with this he was also the chairman of the Atomic Planning Committee, having been appointed to this position by the Prime Minister of India.
The young man became ashamed of his arrogance and he fell at Sarabhai's feet in tears. Sarabhai asked him to stand up and said: "Beyond every creation there is always a Creator. So it does not matter whether it is the time of Mahabharata or today's India. Never forget God."
